What to do in case of suspected corona infection

Health authorities, the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs (HSMI) and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians of Hesse (KV) maintain regular contact in order to limit the virus of spreading. A cornerstone of the strategy is to quickly identify and isolate infected persons.

People can be isolated at home or in hospital. Isolation at home is possible for persons who are not seriously ill. Persons who are seriously ill, are isolated in hospital. Public health department points out once again that according to experience in Germany here so far, many patients experience mild disease with non-specific signs and symptoms of acute respiratory illness.

At present, more and more people with mild clinical presentation and symptoms are visiting an emergency room. Public health department therefore urgently appeals to people who only suffer from mild flu symptoms or who are only concerned about being infected with coronavirus, that they should contact their family doctor first.

This is necessary in order to maintain working capacity in emergency departments.

Febrile Patients with symptoms of the respiratory tract, however, should not present themselves unannounced to the family doctor or medical on-call service, but should contact the doctor by telephone first and describe their symptoms.

In order to protect yourself best from coronavirus and all other respiratory diseases, pay attention to personal hygiene: do not shake hands, wash your hands frequently and thoroughly, cough or sneeze into your elbow, do not touch your face, keep your distance when coughing and sneezing, use disposable tissues. Washing your hands with soap destroys the viruses. Viruses have a lipid bilayer, soap destroys this fatty membrane cover and thus kills the virus.

Guidance for owners of farm animals and pets:

Numerous inquiries are being submitted to the Veterinary Office concerning the care of pets and farm animals in case of pet owners or livestock farmers being under quarantine or in case of general restriction on going outdoors.

First of all, it is pointed out that these regulations restricting the freedom of movement of humans according to the German Infection Protection Act are under the responsibility of the health authorities in conjunction with public order offices.

Subject to further development of the epidemic, however, it is to be assumed that there will be exceptions to these restrictions, which will ensure basic care of animals which are not kept in the owner's household. Therefore, please follow further developments closely. No information can be provided from here and at the present time, not even on detailed questions such as permits, "passes" or proofs of animal keeping or livestock husbandry, if any should become necessary.

In this context, reference is made to a publication of the German Equestrian Federation which gives an overview of precautions and rules of conduct applying to the handling of horses.
